WHOLE WHEAT BREAD - 4 loaves
Recently, I found this fail-proof recipe. Prior to this I'd never successfully made loaf bread.
1 ½ cups milk, heated
½ cup shortening or lard
1 ¼ cups warm water
2 tbsp salt
½ cup brown sugar, lightly packed
1 ½ tbsp instant yeast
4 cups whole wheat flour
1. Mix above ingredients and whisk together or use electric mixer for a few minutes.
2. Add an additional 4 cups of whole wheat flour and knead in by hand (or dough machine).
3. Finish by adding 2-3 cups of white flour.
4. Knead by hand for 8-10 minutes (or dough machine).
5. Place in a large greased bowl.
6. Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
7. Punch down and divide dough into 4 pieces, form into loaves, place into greased loaf pans.
8. Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
9. Bake at 350-400 for 30-35 minutes.
10. Remove from oven and remove from pans to cool on a wire rack.
